Indian Bathroom Safety Checklist for Elderly Parents

Indian bathrooms have a few features — tiled floors, bucket-and-mug bathing, squat toilets, monsoon humidity — that general safety advice doesn’t always account for. This checklist is built specifically around those realities.

Flooring

• Anti-slip mat inside the bathing area
• Anti-slip mat at the drying-off spot just outside it
• Loose bath mats or rugs removed, or secured so they can’t slide on tile
• Floor checked for standing water after each use, especially during monsoon

Toilet

• Western-style seated toilet in place, or a portable raised commode if the existing fixture is Indian-style (squat)
• Grab bar installed beside the toilet at a height that suits the user
• Raised toilet seat added if standing up is difficult

Bathing Area

• Grab bar installed inside the shower or bathing area
• Stable stool or shower chair available for bucket bathing or seated showering
• Mug, bucket, soap and shampoo within easy reach without stretching or bending

Lighting and Visibility

• Bright main lighting, particularly important in bathrooms without a window
• Night light installed for after-dark trips
• Light switch reachable without entering a dark room first

Monsoon-Specific Checks

• Mats and non-slip surfaces checked specifically before and during monsoon, since humidity affects grip and drying time
• Any water tracked in from outside wiped promptly, particularly near the entrance

Shared-Bathroom Considerations

• Safety fixtures (grab bars, mats) treated as permanent, family-wide fixtures rather than temporary additions
• Family members reminded to keep the floor and grab bar area clear of stray items
